Overly Cautious

Before anyone gets mad, let me just state that I love animals. But man, this world has become crazier and crazier. I am all for being sensitive and caring, but we have shifted to being way too cautious. Not everything needs to be changed. There are some things that definitely are insensitive and need to be changed. However, political correctness has and continues to go too far. If the things that white people decide are racist, insensitive, etc are not insensitive or offensive to the people that white people claim they are, then why do we need to make unnecessary changes? Recently during the world series we saw this with the braves and the tomahawk chop. Throughout, the world series many different people were concerned about the racism of the Braves and the tomahawk chop and at times have overshadowed the world series and the game itself. What isn't talked about is how the Braves have the support of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Furthermore, Richard Sneed, principal chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians respects and understands if some people are hurt or offended by the Braves or the tomahawk chop, but emphasizes to The Associated Press that there are more pressing issues facing Native Americans and it's upsetting when people don't talk about anything but this one issue. To The Associated Press he states, "There’s just so much happening and the frustrating part for me as a tribal leader is when the only issue that seems to be discussed is ... ‘How offended are you by the chop and should the Braves change their name?’ ... Really, it’s the least of our problems, I guess is what I’m saying.” This is a powerful statement because so much of society is concerned with race and political correctness and yet they are not as concerned with or care about helping with more important issues facing Native Americans.

In a recent instance, PETA, a nonprofit organization, fighting for ethical treatment of animals, requested that the MLB change Bullpen to arm-barn. The reason that they wanted this name change was because they said that is offensive to cows. Excuse me. I cried because I was laughing so hard when I saw that announcement. I am all for fair treatment of animals, but how does the name of where pitchers warm-up have any impact on the treatment of cows. I have wracked my brain to try and come with a reason why this name change would be necessary and I have been unable to come up with a reason. This to me is just ridiculous. There is no reason to change the name of the bull pen. Political correctness goes way too far with this request. I am all for making things right, but the name of where the pitchers has no impact on cows and has created no wrong. I mean I can't even imagine changing the name and hearing the announcers say that the Alex Cora is headed into the arm barn, that is just so silly. Political correctness is a very thing line and quite often we cross it with good intentions, however these changes take a lot of work and it because extra work and unnecessary when organizations should be focusing on other more important issues.
